In our hospital our monthly prenatal breastfeeding class is free, so it is frustrating that not everyone planning to deliver here takes advantage of it. (It's a great class if I do say so myself :) ) We do have a lot of parents in attendance who are planning to deliver at other hospitals that charge for the classes. Our class size has grown recently, and the room is getting fuller and fuller it seems. Still, it is a small percentage of parents who deliver with us. My daughter who is expecting a baby in November in Rhode Island showed me the list of classes her hospital offers. The classes are not expensive from my point of view but for her- living on a tight budget in the military, while also a college student, they are prohibitive. The hospital tour which comes with a little class costs $15. The other classes are about $40. Even that is out of her budget, as she counts every penny. She is reading library books and learning from them. So in some situations it isn't that they don't know about the classes, or that they don't think they need them, it is just that they cannot afford them.
