I also can understand Sharon's frustration, working in Manhattan with not a single baby-friendly hospital in all the five boroughs of NY City and many many clients for whom use of forceps & C-sections are the norm. There are some hospitals that see a very high volume of births where residents are brought in to wonder at the rare woman who gets past all the interventions with an unmedicated birth. It is fairly common among the nursery school moms where my son just finished going to school for women to talk about their planned C-sections - usually following a first C-section. VBAC is not part of the vocabulary. That having been said, in regards to the original article, I wish I were at liberty to say more. The part that I can talk about is that one of the obstetricians mentioned is very much in favor of unmedicated deliveries and often assists in deliveries at one of the birthing centers here in Manhattan. As is typical of the press, the article was written with a particular slant and left out a lot of information.
