I think we have an opportunity to build on the 20/20 ad campaign, if we can band together to get additional segments. 1) An expose on the lack of Baby Friendly Hospitals in the US. I can see a contrasting segment between how breastfeeding works in a hospital setting such as Paula Meier's work with low income women and premies versus other hospitals. As well as interviews with mother's whose breastfeeding was sabotaged by the hospitals. I had one mom whose pediatrician AND the regular postpartum nurses thought she was doing fine and were encouraging breast milk only be pushed relentlessly by a per diem nurse to bottle feed her baby. Finally one of the regular nurser hooked up an SNS (and the mom noticed that she clamped off both tubes) to get this per diem nurse off the mom's back. I saw the baby on day 3 and the baby took 3.5 oz from one breast. I'm sure we have many many examples of sabotage. 2) An expose on the understaffing of lactation consultants - really it is ridiculous that there are so few of us. I believe that the New Yorker is coming out with a segment. 3) Include a segment on the issues of guilt versus regret with Kathy Dettwyler! Could we take on this approach to build on the 20/20 segment?
