I can't second the recommendations for the Solti (too hyterical and excitable), Karajan (too manicured) or Bohm (does not dig deep enough, too light and brassy). My Ring recordings are: -Goodall final two scenes from Gotterdammerung (Chandos, 1 mid price CD) -Barenboim Rheingold -Dohnanyi Walkure -Walkure Act 1 (Walter 1935 with Lehmann & Melchior) - unable to find a satisfactory Siegfried but am excitied about the upcomming Naxos historic release at the end of the month featuring extended extracts with Melchior from the late 20s, early 30s. - Gotterdammerung Knappertsbusch live 1951 Bayreuth I would like to own the Furtwangler 1953 RAI live, despite the orchestral fluffs, as the conducting here really is the best. I would very much like to hear the 1953 Krauss, 1952 and 1955 Keilberth (the first stereo Ring, locked away in Decca vaults for almost 50 years and the live radio recording with Modl as Brunnhilde). If I was casting a Ring today it would have Robert Hale (Wotan), Christine Brewer (Brunnhilde), Heppner (Siegfried) Philip Langridge (Loge) Bullock (Sieglinde). Adam Fischer would conduct the Bayreuth Orchestra and it would be recorded act-by-act in front of a studio audience and the BIS engineers would ensure a natural sound stage!
