Thanks to Winnie and Katherine for your information for the mom who wants to go through detoxification (eating only raw fruits/veggies and drinking wheat grass juice for 5 days). The mom has decided that it would not be good to breastfeed during detoxification due to the possibility of toxins being passed into the milk. Unfortunately, what she has decided to do instead is to take her mother (baby's grandmother) with her to the spa and have grandmother feed the baby expressed breastmilk during the week and mom will pump and dump her milk. She will be going at the end of July and baby will be 6 months old. The concerns that I expressed to the mom were that there is a possibility that baby will go on a nursing strike and develop a bottle preference or conversely, the baby will refuse the bottle because mom is there. I am also concerned about her milk supply due to the restricted diet and exclusively pumping. I know it can be hard to maintain supply with a pump (she will be using a Pump In Style). Mom's reasoning for going ahead with the process is that she was diagnosed with high levels of metals and toxins in her body and she had some precancerous lesions on her cervix. She firmly believes that detoxification will help rid her body of these toxins and decrease her risk of cancer. She is feeling an urgency to go through the process, as she avoided it during pregnancy. For those of you that have so much more experience in counseling moms than I do, how do you draw the line between giving mom information and letting her make her own decisions and the urge to advise her to do what "I" would do. I find myself very frequently (in many situations, not just this one) biting my tongue to keep from giving what amounts to parenting advice rather than sticking to the facts and presenting information to the mom and letting her make her own decisions. I really value Lactnet and am grateful to everyone who takes the time to share information and advise. I have learned so much here. Thank you!
