My take on "pumping a mom in ICU" comes from the theory that the breast needs to be emptied for various reasons (resume nursing later, comfort, prevent mastitis and infection complications etc.). We wouldn't expect the mom to empty her own urine bag and we wouldn't skip doing it just because we didn't think it was "our job, as ICU nurses." Helping mom pump or getting family to do it or doing it ourselves (as LC or ICU staff) is part of the care of the total patient. I'll always remember a mom I saw about 6 mo after her escapade thru ICU, post hemorrhage & Hyster., who told me how grateful she was that BF was preserved even when she was unconscious. This lady received 22 pints of blood, back when AIDS was new and she said she was just taking the chance and if it didn't work, they'd go together.
