We had this same problem at our hospital. We scheduled inservices for every shift of nurses. It was titled, "Nipple Shields and Nipple Sandwiches", and lasted about 20 min. We taught about when and how to use a nipple shield and the "nipple sandwich" technique of conforming the breast to the baby's mouth. This made a big difference in the overuse of nipple shields by the nurses!
