Hi, Debbie: Wishing you luck (you're going to need all you can get!) in your new endeavors. Don't even get me started on the issue of visitors and brstfdg. We expanded our visiting hours a couple of years ago under pressure from the families, and, in my humble opinion, what a mistake! Mothers will tell their nurses that they have questions about brstfdg and want to see the LC, but when I come into the room, I am asked to please come back as Aunt Susie, my sister, my neighbor, by friend, is here from out of town visiting and, of course, they take precendence over my baby's care and feeding. Then on patient satisfaction surverys they complain (fortunately, not often)that they didn't see the LC or not enough time was spent with the LC. And if the visitor issue were not bad enough, a few months ago patients were given the OK to use cell phones in all areas of the hospital, except the ICUs. Now, when I'm doing rounds, she has her cell phone in one ear and the land line phone in the other! And they don't even acknowledge that someone has walked into the room! I have resorted to politely requesting that mom get off the phone so that I may address her and her baby's needs. I've seen this same behavior directed at the MDs, too, so I guess it's nothing personal. Our perinatal instructors do address mom's time management while in the hospital, helping them to set priorities, but apparently, this info goes in one ear and out the other! Sigh...
