Pam, I LOVE it! How do you make it illegal to be a mammal?! I have a quite extensive powerpoint presentation just sitting and waiting to be presented on the "Science of Attachment". There are numerous studies/articles which I found on the internet on this subject. There was an excellent article in the July/August 2003 issue of Mothering magazine on "the biological roots of love" which is extensively footnoted. Linda Palmer has information on her website as well as in her book Baby Matters on the importance of oxytocin in all of this. If you go to one of the search engines you will find quite a bit. Jared Diamond, a cultural anthropologist, has also published on this subject. This makes perfect sense to those of us who have degrees in biology and understand our mammalian roots and is something that I have been preaching for years - we cannot ignore our roots! The irony of all this is that parents "get it" when it is explained to them and I have recently had more parents telling me (rather defiantly) that they have every intention of sleeping with their babies at home. They are also asking for information on how to do it safely. We have been told at our hospital that we cannot give out such information due to liability issues. I pose the question, "Who is liable when a baby comes in DOA due to unsafe sleep practices and the parents accuse the hospital of never having been educated?" I pray daily that this situation never occurs. If parents get it why don't the so-called "experts"? I wish all of you in MO the best of luck in your endeavors at your meeting.
