Here are my thoughts on the question Lisa posed: Hospital grade can mean many things. It can mean that the pump can be sanitized between users so that all pathogens are removed. It can mean that the device consistently performs up to standards with little variance in pressures. It can mean that the device is electrically safe in a setting where flammable anesthetics may be in use. Medela can verify the pressures on all of their pumps. The Pump In Style should give the same pressure readings as a Lactina, Symphony of Classic when it leaves the factory. Wear and use may affect the pressure over time and it electrically differs from the others. Mothers who share a Pump In Style or use a secondhand pump may not sanitize it totally so that it is safe from pathogens. Insurance companies sometimes make rulings that turn out to be nonsense. They are looking to save money.
