I feel we just have our finger in the dyke. Ideally I would like to see the NICU RNs take a more active role with 1-1.5 FTE to do the teaching, planning, support groups, research and really hard consults. The more FTE LCs we have (both on the mother-baby unit and in the NICU), the more the nurses abdicate their role in supporting the breastfeeding mother. We are working on reversing that trend.
