Hi All, I am just baffled with two cases I've had recently and I need some input: In the last two months I have worked with two moms who presented with hypersensitive nipples prenatally. Both stated that this nipple sensitivity was not hormonally driven and both have had it for years. When the first gal delivered she screamed bloody murder with the first latch (I was there). She continued to try and nurse off and on for several weeks with all kinds of help from me as we tried to desensitize her nipples. She refused Amitriptyline (used for chronic pain pts.) but did take motrin around the clock. I did notice that when she pumped her nipples turned a mulberry color. I am seriously wondering if she is having vasospasms however this color change and pain are her only symptoms.I did suggest vit B6 but she is ready to give up. The other mom just delivered on Friday and also is having extreme nipple pain. Her nipples look very pink and pumping also hurts her. In her history she stated she was once treated for "systemic yeast" and went on the anti-yeast diet. Am I looking at yeast, neuropathy, hormones, what? I call this nipple pain of unknown etiology and it just bothers me. I have ruled out sexual abuse in both moms and the latch has been worked on and fine turned as well. I know that these two cases can have two different problems however they presented the same.... with extreme prenatal nipple sensitivity and anxious mothers who knew it was going to hurt and it did. I would love a study on this. Thanks for listening as I really just needed to vent my professional frustration.
