Phyllis Adamson stated: "When her baby wants more than food at the breast, he wants mothering or nurturing at the breast, and mom complains about never being able to keep her clothes on, you get closer to understanding her expectations versus her reality." When talking with brand new moms, I like to approach the subject of "comfort suckling" in this manner. Yes, your baby may want to nurse for more than just a "meal". As long as baby maintains a good latch while comforting himself at the breast, there is no harm. (I do mention that some babies may try to slip down to just the nipple for comfort and mom needs to help baby maintain an effective latch.) Then I point out that in the first days, this additional time at breast may help the milk volume "kick in" a little sooner than if baby is only at the breast for meals. I find that many moms who seem to bristle at the idea of "just using her as a pacifier" are willing to allow baby to stay at the breast for comfort is she sees "something in it for her". Hopefully, at least some of these moms will decide it's not such a bad thing and may continue to allow baby to comfort at the breast even after the full milk supply is established.
