Good morning from rainy & cold(freezing rain) metro Washington, D. C. I want to thank the members of lactnet who have responded to previous posts concerning evidence based literature supporting freezer size in NICU's. I am happy to report that we will be purchasing a larger full size freezer for our NICU that should provide adequate storage space for EBM. Now our focus (mine as the LC and the NICU dietician) is turning to decreasing incidence of infections in NICU by monitoring bacterial contamination of EBM after it has been expressed and stored in sterile containers. Currently we are trialing the use of a dietary technician to prepare all NICU feedings. This includes EBM preparation with and without use of HMF and formula preparation. The preparation would be done in one area of the NICU designated for feeding preparation only. Once the feedings for the next 24 hours are prepared, they are transported to the refridgerators in the respective NICU's. Does anyone on the list utilize a process like this, and if so would you be willing to share protocols and policies. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
