Hello! I have a two month old baby who recently recovered from the flu, pneumonia, and two ear infections! When I brought her to the ER I asked how long it would be before the x-ray because I needed to nurse her. The nurse offered pedialyte and said she'd have to ask the doctor if I could nurse. I told the nurse she could ask but I was going to nurse her anyway. My baby had been nursing fine. She was retracting mildly and wheezing but maintaining her sats on room air. My baby was admitted and put in the mist tent which she loved! Pedialyte became the topic of conversation for two days. I was told that first of all, they weren't sure how much she was getting at the breast. I explained that she is in the 95th percentile for her weight and she was pooping and peeing regularly. I was also told that milk would thicken her secretions and prolong her illness!!! They wanted to give pedialyte after nursing which I repeatedly refused. I explained that breastmilk is already 85% water and she was plenty hydrated. I couldn't believe the things I was hearing. Where is this "breastmilk causing thicker secretions"coming from. And does anyone know of any studies or medical protocol for feeding babies with respiratory distress. I would like to provide them some updated information.
