I just received my 3 copies of American Baby and have also read with interest (tongue-in-cheek) the article on What Breastfeeding is REALLY Like. The general tone of the article seems to be resentment on the mother's part that a baby takes up so much of ME time. Gee, how dare the most neurologically immature mammal at birth dare to demand so much attention! Is it so awful to have to slow down one's life for a few weeks? What a sacrifice, to actually be forced to lay on the couch in front of the TV for several hours a day ( 18 to be exact, although where that figure comes from...) and veg out while nursing the baby! What a sacrifice to actually expect the other adults in your life to pick up the slack for a few weeks to allow a mother to actually mother the new baby. Like going to the grocery store to buy formula and bottles and nipples, prepare the formula, put it in bottles, and wash or sterilize bottles is so much less time consuming than breastfeeding? The article on getting your kids to sleep was even better! I was exhausted and frustrated after reading that one! I'm surprised the ME generation actually took the "expert's" advice to sleep on the floor in the baby's room for weeks on end. Surprised they didn't complain that it too uncomfortable for ME to do that. Wouldn't sleeping in the comfort of MY own bed meeting their baby's needs meet more of MY own needs? Sorry, couldn't help the sarcasm. The whole point of American Baby seems to be centered on meeting MY own needs while still having the ONLY most perfect baby to dress like a doll, show off, and buy the most expensive, most popular toys and baby paraphenalia for.
