Maybe so, but Mahler possibly would not have agreed. In 1905, Mahler
and his wife heard Walter play through his symphonic poem, Peer Gynt.
Mahler was shocked by the 'anemic sterility' of the work, according
to his wife. That was not the first time that GM was disappointed
with Walter's music; he panned Walter's string quartet earlier. Out
of friendship, Mahler attended several premieres of Walter's music,
all the while knowing that the younger man had no future as a composer.
All of the above is from La Grange.
