Hi Jacqui,
My friend had nearly the same circumstances with her young son and oral
surgery. She did some research and chose to wait a couple of years before
having the surgery. She was very careful about his oral care during this
time and snack food as well She is a dental hygienist so has some
knowledge. about the subject, and the ability to observe the progress of the
decayed tooth,. She also chose general anesthesia for her son. He nursed
right before surgery (meaning a couple of hours) and a couple of hours after
wards. She reminded me that the main reason a dentist will say no sucking
is that the action of the straw or a sippy cup can be detrimental. The
action of suckling from a breast is much different. I imagine she would be
willing to email this mom, if she would like this please email me privately.
Warmly, Judith Markham IBCLC, Oceanside, CA
