What I share is the information regarding safety, etc. Then, I tell them that every time they want a cigarette, to first nurse the baby. Which means they will likely be nursing quite often, and it means they have a chance to let some of breastfeeding's magic give them the stress relief they expect from the nicotine. Hopefully that will help them cut back without feeling it so much. Then I tell them after they have nursed and the baby is happy, they can step outside for the cigarette and clean up when they return. I explain how the chemicals stay on their skin, their clothes, and their furniture, etc. I tell them if they can quit long enough they will find out just how strong those smells are when they come across them. I smoked for a few years before I became pregnant. Actually, until I was told I was pregnant and my OB said " I can smell that you are a smoker. That's nice. You just quit. Hand me your cigarettes, go to your car and bring me any more you have. Your baby does not smoke so neither do you." I was young and obedient and have not smoked since. That was almost 17 years ago. BUT, in my dreams, I am young, driving a sports car, having a Virginia Slims Lights OR sitting at a bar in my best dress having a frozen rumrunner and lighting up. Haha. Of course, I am also a size 8 in my Calvin jeans again, and all of 21. Haha. SO, while I have quit I have not forgotten. All health concerns etc not lost on me now but truly not an issue until it was no longer my health at stake, but that of my child. Indeed, if you must smoke, be sure to breastfeed. But if you can quit, do.
