Hello ladies - Obstetrician came into my office asking for suggestions as to what this is... Many years ago, mother attempted to nurse twins. After a couple of days, came down with mastitis in upper, outer quaderant of right breast and quit breastfeeding. Jump ahead several years and mother is having a problem with the same breast. Four days prior to her menses every month, the area where she had mastitis becomes red and inflammed and excruciatingly painful to touch. There is no discharge from the nipple and once her period begins, problem solved. She is not taking any forms of hormone birth control pills. Mother has been seen by breast surgeon who has done mammogram and finds nothing. The OB thought maybe it was some type of deep abscess but sonogram showed nothing. No lumps or anything unusual. I have checked the usual resources and haven't found anything. Will check Dr. Love's book when I get home. The doctor's only thought is to place the mother on a course of antibiotic prior to each monthly period. I think she would like to have an answer for her patient as to what this is, especially before she perscribes antibiotics. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance...
