I think that many people feel more comfortable nursing in the cradle hold when they are out and about. i have been waiting for someone else to bring this up 1st b/c i cannot r/m which publication i read it in, but i do recall about 2-3 yrs ago reading an article discussing the drawbacks of the cross-cradle hold. i am pretty sure it was either LLL's new beginnings or mothering magazine... at that time i was not yet a breastfeeding follow up counselor so i was not familiar with all the different positions. i was nursing my 1st baby, but had never used nor been shown the cross-cradle. from what i recall of the article, it said that moms were more likely to develop wrist/arm pain/fatigue and possibly have more incidences of plugged ducts and mastitis with prolonged use of the cross-cradle. i do r/m it being touted as being a valuable tool for initial positioning imm. post partum, however. i will try to rummage through my back issues and see if i can discern from whence this article originated! it always stuck in my mind when i began helping nursing moms and i admit i had avoided this hold for the most part b/c of this article. but we also seem to favor the football hold for very large breasted women here in michigan, which prejudice i have found to be baseless in actual application! ~jacqui gruttadauria "bobo, what are you doing to deedle?"
