I have permission to post this situation from my client, a single, well educated, first time mom. She is working with legal advisor to make parenting plan together with FOB. Infant successfully latching with good milk transfer using nipple shield, mom has not been successful weaning from shield, reports some pain with latch without shield. Infant feedings are 45 minutes, frequent every 1 to 2 hours with 2 to 3 hour stretch during night. Mom called tonight reporting she had been presented with a court order stating she must give FOB the infant when he arrived. He arrived when she was breastfeeding and he stated he had formula and could feed the baby when he cried during the hour he had the infant. The police came and stated the court order had not been registered properly and she would not be in contempt of court by not giving the baby to the father. I told this mom I would find some references for her legal advisor, supporting the benefit of exclusively breast feeding with shield, preferred to offering expressed milk or artificial feedings by bottle. I also explained to this father that giving the baby time to become successful at the breast and to wean from the nipple shields would take time and would improve the duration of breastfeeding mom desired for their baby. Suggestions for references this mom could take to her lawyer tomorrow would be appreciated Pamela Arnott RN, BSN, IBCLC <<Pamela Arnott.vcf>> *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
