We had a baby yesterday who kept dropping his blood sugar (he was 2 days old), and I always say get Mom pumping and if she pumps enough we can feed that. But the NICU nurse and NNP were saying you have to give formula because it will bring up the blood sugar faster because of the carbs. Is there any truth to this? Mom had 10 cc of colostrum they could have given, and they woul only give it after the baby got an ounce of formula. I want to brag for a minute - we just opened a new hospital and the Mom/Baby rooms have queen sized beds, there is no central nursery as we all think about it, just a small transport room. The NICU rooms are suites, with each baby having their own room with an attached room (with those same queen sized beds) for the parents, who can stay as long as their baby is a patient.
