I have searched the archives to find a partial response to my quesiton: Is there any literature to support mixing formula and breast milk together to improve or enhance digestion, specifically in NICU populations? The citation in Clin Pediatrics, "The effect of nutritional additives on anti-infective properties in human milk" does not address the digestion issue. Past posts reveal that there is literature to support this practice however I have not found it. If anyone knows the science, please share it with me. There is controversy in our NICU about whether this is a valid practice. At times, mothers will run low of milk, choose to wean to formula, or simply forget to bring more milk to the hospital. Especially in instances when a mother is running low of her pumped milk and may be 'drying up', would you recommend mixing it with formula to 'extend' the benefits of the formula rather than giving all the breast milk before switching to all formula?
