Laurence Sherwood writes happily of his discovery of the music of this
fine composer. Indeed -- while her lovely songs and much of the choral
music are squarely traditional, the gorgeous and emotional Viola Sonata
and the exploratory Piano Trio are staples of many college courses on
women composers and on 20th century music (and the quartal harmonies in
the Trio always remind me of Ravel's Trio, a fairly close contemporary
to the Clarke). Another good piece of hers, though later (from 1941),
is the Prelude, Allegro, and Pastorale for clarinet and viola. It's
been recorded at least twice.
