The newly released Ashkenazy/RPO (digital) recording is excellent. Why
it was in the can for 10 years and not released (at least not in the U.S.)
is inexplicable. He uses the original Prokofiev orchestration. A favorite
of mine is the Chandos recording with Kitaenko and the Danish RSO, somewhat
slower footed than Ashkenazy, but with even more spectacular sound. He uses
the revised Russian orchestration. Both of these are complete recordings.

Among historical recordings of excerpts, no Prokofiev lover should be without
Ancerl/CPO (Supraphon) or Mitropoulos/NYP (Sony). Among more modern recordings,
I favor Skrowaczewski (Mercury), Salonen (Sony) and Abbado (DG), all of which
offer extended excerpts in excellent sound. Don't miss the historicals
though.
