I agree with an earlier poster that the babe with sores/blisters around the mouth who transmitted them to mom sounds more like a case of herpes. Either way, at this point as both are infected no reason to interrupt breastfeeding. I can tell you from personal experience that these lesions are very painful. My now 6-year old developed herpes cold sores when he was about 11 mos old (caught apparently from another child at daycare) He shared them with me (fortunately just 1 breast, though) I could barely tolerate nursing him on that side, and couldn't tolerate pumping at all until the lesions healed. Fortunately, I have never had another lesion, although my little guy continues to get cold sores every so often. If mom's outbreak is recent, acyclovir orally may shorten it and decrease pain. We've also had luck for my son with topical Denavir. Topical lidocaine can be used for pain relief in either party.
