Hi Ann, Paula Meir's research from 2000 show's that shield use does not decrease milk supply, in fact, a baby who is not latching or not latching well gets MORE milk from the breast when using a shield. So I would advise this mom to relax and use the shield for as long as baby needs it, for days or weeks. Let baby nurse 10-12x/24 hr day, 1,2,3,or 4 sides. Use breast compression. Pump 2-4 x a day to build up supply and give an idea how much she is producing. Supplement as baby needs with EBM. I vote for baby eating at the breast with shield. What is the alternative? Pumping and cup feeding, or pumping and finger fdg? or pumping and bo fdg? How is baby's wt. gain pattern?
