While I would also prefer the Naxos issue over the Ormandy,I also have
it conducted by Stokowski (St. Louis); the composer (Boston Symphony);
Newstone (Sacramento Symphony?); an Eastman performance, etc. Never heard
the Bernstein broadcast, but would love to. At any rate, each performance
seems to have a very different perspective. I find it a quirky piece and
perhaps so did the composer as he revised it on several occasions. However
he also did that with other works like the 5th (which I like best in the
original version). Each one of the performances I have heard seem to
capture parts of the work quite well, but I still don't find anyone of
them gets all that I see in the score. Guess if I had to choose one...I
don't think I could.
