Dear Kathy, and this is why it doesn't work. To have to kill yourself doing it, because you care, and to have to continue working when you've punched out, or whatever, is enough to make me spit nails. As long as we put up with this professional mistreatment, we suffer as LCs, and the mothers suffer, and the hospital wins by funneling its resources elsewhere, and not to those who work their backsides off. This is what burns me up about hospitals, and about mismanagement of pay and benefits and hours for mostly women, who mostly work their backsides off, and feel that that is part of their territory. I have seen (and been one) many nurses run their feet off. This is hospital taking advantage of mostly female employees. It's no accident that in the nursing profession, 80% of nurses have a parent who is an alcoholic, so many grow up feeling that they have to do it all, and then ask permission to breathe air on top of it. Burns me right up. Kathleen Do most hospitals give just lip service to breastfeeding without providing adequate resources? Yes. What does the hospital based LC do? She kills herself to provide the best possible care anyway, working harder to overcome the lack of resources.
