when i started a new job at a hosp w/o pumps, one nurse was referring all
moms to a maternity store. they did have the lowest prices on rentals but i
thought moms should be given options. so i wrote up a little handout about
why i recommend hosp.grade pumps for certain situations and i listed the
rental depots in the surrounding area. i believe i listed all the ones in
new orleans and 2 each from surrounding suburbs. i think this is fair.
it has been posted about in the past and i believe discussed in JHL re the
ethical questions. i am very comfortable w/ my own ethics and do not refer
for pumps unless i feel it is definitely needed. in other words i do not
routinely recommend pumps.
due to the difficulty moms have had in obtaining pumps from these places and
i have had in helping to arrange these pumps from various vendors, i feel we
really need decent pumps in our own immediate community. so i have suggested
to establish a pump program at our hospital which has been approved and
hopefully w/i a short period of time will be up and running. my boss plans
to use the income from the pump rentals and sales to send nurses for
continuing education. i will continue to recommend pumps for the same
reasons i have been doing so: premies, babies not latching, etc. i will
continue to let mothers know of the places that rent/sell pumps in the
surrounding communities, including our own facility.
