Dear Anita: Well, since it's a Child Development class, I'd talk about newborn behavior, growth, and development and then talk about how breastfeeding meets ALL of those needs. That is, start from their frame of reference. You could chat with the teacher a bit beforehand to see what, if anything, they've already covered re: newborn growth and development and then go from there. So, some specific ideas... -Bergman's work on size of newborn stomach and the 'fit' with amt of colostrum secreted. -sleep/wake cycles (esp. re: 'sleeping thru the night' and what that REALLY means - eg., 5-hr stretch max if you're lucky), why babies have days and nights mixed up, how bf 'fits' with these cycles, and implications for SIDS (eg., McKenna's work). -infant immune system underdevelopment and importance of human milk to support the immune function. Golly, there's just so much! If you need more specific ideas, I suggest Linda Smith's "Coach's Notebook" as it has lots and lots of ideas. Good Luck! --Doraine Bailey Lexington-Fayette Co.
