The death was announced yesterday (March 2nd) of Malcolm Williamson,
Master of the Queen's Music in succession to Sir Arthur Bliss, after a
long illness.

His operas, symphonies, orchestral, choral and chamber works are personal,
approachable and of the highest quality; and his current near-total
eclipse has been one of the scandals of British establishment music for
some years.

His music will most surely be rediscovered and find many new friends in
the years to come; but though that is a comfort to those of us who found
- and find - his work and ideas an inspiration, this remains a very sad
day for English and Australian music.
