I'm proud to say, after that TV marathon, that I work at Maricopa Medical Center. :-) They did quite a few private interviews with medical staff, (me too) but I didn't see any of those on this program. > It was quite favorable to breastfeeding, although didn't show much > directly, almost every mother interviewed after midnight, who had given > birth had already nursed her baby several times. The show's host, Mary > Alice Williams, gave a message that two thirds of new moms choose > breastfeeding in the US, and one third are still nursing at six months. > (This could be better but at least it is up from the past.) She talked > about the benefits of breastfeeding for a whole segment. Almost every > mother mentioned when asked how she was feeling after her birth, that her > baby nursed, it was part of their natural response to how they were > feeling. Mary Alice also said she breastfed her twins! When I was interviewed, the questions were not on the 'why' of BFing, but on how I feel about my job, and about the moms & babies. > Even Dr. Jen Berman shared her elective cesarean of a few weeks > ago, some births were taped, about 18 births occurred on the ten hour show > at four hospitals around the US, both vaginal and a few emergency and > planned cesarean occurred. Dr. Berman seemed sorry she had chosen a > cesarean thinking it would save her the stress incontinence she had > experienced after her vaginal birth, but found the cesarean very much more > painful right now. She was actually breastfeeding on the show. Dr Berman's OB was FIRMLY in favor of mother's choice for elective c/s. The focus of her argument was to preserve the pelvic floor for future sexual relations and avoiding postnatal incontinence. She was dismissive of Kagel exercises. Mary Alice's beliefs came through that perhaps more caution should be taken in making this choice. Given time, she may have come to the baby's condition (I hate the word 'tolerate') with c/s. I had to smile when Dr. Berman said if she had known about the post-op pain, she may not have chosen the c/s. I share an office with Becky Bell, RN, BSN, NIDCAP specialist and CLC from Georgetown. Too bad the sound was poor during her Kangaroo Care segment. More later tonight as I get feedback at work about the camera crew in the hospital. > Ellen Bane Mahony, RN, MS, LCCE, IBCLC > [log in to unmask] --- Phyllis Adamson, IBCLC --- Glendale, AZ, USA --- [log in to unmask] --- Scanned by Norton AntiVirus with auto-updates *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
