Hello I went to the page mentions above in an earlier e mail, I thought it was ok, looked at the links section and it had a e mail to suggest new breastfeeding links, I e mailed the lady and asked for mine to be added, her is her response : ((I need help finding the exact page on UNICEF's site that backs up my quote, I am 100% sure that I copied and pasted it from there but afterlooking and looking I cant find it! If you can help me , please let me know! Thanks! Cindy: Thank you for writing. I have visited your web site in the past, however, I will have to politely decline to link to it. On the front page it states: "UNICEF states that 1.5 million babies die each year as a result of being fed artificial formula, some die from diarrhea and other intestinal illnesses, some die from malnutrition because their families can not afford to purchase formula, and some die from the illnesses that formula fed babies are more likely to contract." You have misquoted the UNICEF's report. The UNICEF report specifically states: http://www.unicef.org/ffl/04/6.htm Unclean bottles and teats can cause illnesses such as diarrhoea and ear infections. Diarrhoea can be deadly for babies. Illness is less likely if the bottles and teats are sterilized in boiling water before each feed, but bottle-fed babies are still far more susceptible to diarrhoea and other common infections than breastfed babies. Feeding the baby breastmilk substitutes can cause poor growth or illness if too much or too little water is added or the water is not clean. It is important to boil and then cool the water and carefully follow the directions for mixing breastmilk substitutes." It further goes on to say: "No one wants to impose breastfeeding on mothers. When women have the resources to afford adequate supplies of formula, safe water and fuel to sterilize bottles and synthetic nipples, formula may be an appropriate alternative for those who do not wish to breastfeed." There are many factors in regards to the 1.5 million babies who die each year, and it does not solely reside on the backs of formula. The mass majority die from improperly cleaned bottles, dilution of formula and includes both formula fed babies and babies fed expressed breastmilk. Misquoting does an injustice to anyone who is not actively latching their child onto the breast. I have nothing against giving facts to support breastfeeding, I do however have an issue with misquoting something to sound different then what it was intended. I've done a lot of research on the UNICEF issue, and it was actually your web site, and that misquote that prompted me to do so. That misquote does more damage then you perhaps understand or will ever understand. I know this from personal experience.
