Barbara commented on the advice one pediatrician gives to wear something removable when smoking and take it off to interact with baby. I have been telling moms this for some time myself. We all know there are carcinogens in the environment of a smoker. Where more than on the clothes they wear while doing it? They put baby up on that shoulder and baby's head is just buried in it. My articles are all at work and though I read this question before I left there Thursday, I didn't have time to look it up but I do want to comment on this thread. Tomorrow I will try to post more if I find further clarification for this issue. From what I remember when our organization did a safe sleep brochure (committee included Dr. James McKenna), smoking is a risk factor for SIDS. There is an increased risk when co-sleeping when mother is a smoker. One study found no increased risk in co-sleeping if father was the smoker and mother was not. There is speculation about the micro-environment around the baby's nose in bed, but research didn't find significantly different carbon monoxide levels around co-sleeping babies of smoking moms as opposed to non-smoking ones. I believe Dr McKenna was agreeable on that point also, that moms who smoke should not co-sleep with baby in the bed. It is cautioned against in our brochure which is on our website at www.indianaperinatal.org. However, nearby is encouraged.
