I chose the Ameda for the hospital I work at to give to nursing mothers. If a mom needs an electric pump to use in the hospital for a transferred baby or difficult latching, they can either rent the pump for the needed time, and it becomes a one-hand pump for later use. It is also compatible with the Purely Yours pump and can even be used with the Pump in Style. I find many mothers today using their friends pumps but always recommend a new kit even if they are using a used pump. I would like to send most nursing mothers home with one if needed for later use. I find many mothers are returning to work these days or if short separations are inevitable would rather see expressed breastmilk given than formula. I think the Ameda is easier to use as a hand pump than the Medela. The cost is fairly inexpensive but some look at it as giving away too much. However, they don't see the formula gifts as too much. I can't believe all the formula my daughter was sent prenatally unsolicited. It really is true what mother's are up against with this agressive marketing and well meaning but misdirected staff putting her on lists. She is planning to give it away to the local food pantry where unfortunately many unfortunate babies aren't given their mother's milk.Marsha Walker is certainly right all these years. I have recently seen her book, "Selling out Mother's and Babies", and have always talked about advertising, but to be dealt it as a grandmother advocating nursing. My son-in-law thought the companies are being "generous. " I tried to stay calm while explaining how subversive the companies are being to new parents. Thanks for all the well wishes for my new granddaughter, 8 days old and thriving solely on her mom' breastfeeding. My daughter is so competent nursing, I am so proud of her. It was a tiny worry that things would not go easily for her, especially when I see so many give up, but so far, couln't be better. She did not give the baby anything but her nursing the first days, and it is so important, it just reinforced that to me. I guess my daughter was paying attention to me, even though during her teenage years I would never have guessed that.
