Sorry for the delay in reply, a bit behind. The query was - had Peter H done some work on body temperature increase during breastfeeding (in regard to a previous post which reported a woman who said she became febrile each time she breastfed). Peter has only done some thermography of the breast during a breastfeed and found that the lactating breast is much hotter than a (contralateral) non lactating breast in the same woman- up to 2 degrees C, I think (which is why skin to skin is so important in thermoregulation). They also measured that the breast temperature decreases significantly over a feed of 15 minutes suggesting there may decreased milk synthesis as the feed progresses. This work was unfortunately not continued as the PhD student transferred elsewhere. But I'm pretty sure there was no basal body temperatures measured and am not aware of any studies where there has been. However my question would be was this a perceived or a measured increase in maternal body temp during feeds? If measured what was the increase in temp? I know a lot of women "feel hot" during a breastfed just due to the body contact with their infant and perhaps(?) due to an increase in their metabolism at the time of the feed.
