Just when I thought we had administration accepting that one does not have to be an RN to function as an IBCLC in the hospital, another hitch comes up. Apparently according to state medical regulations (in WI anyway) only RNs and licensed people can accept MD orders, especially over the phone. Now that we will be charging for outpatient visits, we will be getting an order from the doc (usually Ped or FP) and our manager is concerned that our non-RN IBCLC will not be able to take these orders legally. Apparently this is something JCAHO will be making a big deal of this year also. Do any of you run into similar problems? I asked about OTs PTs etc and was told they are specifically allowed to take orders. Arrrggghhh!!
