It was not until I worked in a hospital that I came to believe that mothers could indeed have sore nipples from day one from thrush. When a pregnant mother cannot bear to allow the water in the shower to touch her nipples and she has had thrush with a previous baby, then I have no reason to think that just one day of suckling (especially incorrect suckling) cannot send her into full-blown pain. Last year I saw a mom prenatally who had thrush on her nipples while pregnant. She treated, at my urging, before the birth and found that the pain vanished. I would certainly imagine that she would have experienced pain from the beginning had she not taken this route.
