Personally, I am glad this recommendation is part of our usage guidelines. Have you ever posted something and then when you read it later get an entirely different impression from what your original intent was? Then there are those typos that can change a meaning entirely. (A classic one that happened to me was when I intended to say "assets" and omitted the "t". Certainly made a big difference!) By asking permission to pass something along, the original poster has the opportunity to make any appropriate corrections. In addition, it feels good to know that something you have said was important enough to someone else that they want to pass it along. Also, I usually indicate in my permission that I would like to be credited with the statement(s) if they are being published. There are two reasons for this-first, I can include it in my personnel folder at work in by "boquets and brickbats" section. Secondly, if I were ever to decide to put my thoughts in any formal writing, I have retained claim to them. (Not sure if this is correct with copyright law, but it makes sense to me.)
