I've searched the archives but found conflicting information. With all the recent news about how the low carbohydrate/ high protein diet (such as Atkins) may not be a bad as the medical community first thought, what is the current recommendation for nursing mothers? I spoke with a mother who has a 6 month old and is trying to wean in order to go on the Atkins diet. She was told that the diet causes 'things' to be excreted in the milk. I don't know if she meant the possiblity of toxins mobilized from the mother's body when weight loss (by Atkins or any other method) is rapid or that the Atkins diet in itself is inherently bad for breastfeeding mothers. Her baby is supplemented with soy formula and solid foods. Mom would like to continue breastfeeding but wants to lose weight. I've suggested other, more mainstream diets, but she insists that Atkins is the only one that works for her. What advice would you give her?
