I think he has a brilliant insight into a newborns needs and he seems to truly care. He is not into 'letting a baby cry it out." He advocates replicating the womb-like environment for at least 12 weeks....Gee, how can anyone complain about that loving approach? He points out the womb was a very noisy place, so make some noise. So far I have smiled at his loving comments about babies and parents and I totally agree with the fact that non-stop crying is very hard on most parents and his techniques are worth more than one try. He has a definite order in his technique and it makes sense to me. Although I have noticed, I can make do when the need arises; On Sunday I was at a beach picnic and I heard a little one crying which always results in me searching out the baby! The mom said 'she cries all the time, she has for 11 weeks" this was her third baby. I asked to hold her. I got her, walked away from the crowd, did not have a blanket with which to swaddle her so I held her really close to my chest, on her side with a pretty fast jiggle and shhshhshhed her for 3 minutes. She slept peacefully in my arms for more than an hour!! It was really nice! I think between Harvey Karp and Elizabeth Pantley there are finally some wonderful and GENTLE answers out there for parents. I for one am very excited to read about loving and kind solutions instead of torture. Two things I love about my job: seeing a baby and mom 'get it' about breastfeeding (you know, when the baby gets a true hit of milk and looks up at his mommy with such joy and you can watch the baby's body relax, the little fists unwind, mommy smiles and you think...OK, they are gonna make it) and seeing a baby happily and peacefully fall and stay asleep. Read the books..Karp and Pantley.....they both offer some nice solutions. Annie VerSteeg IBCLC Beach Area Breastfeeding [log in to unmask] breastfeeding...
