Nikki, I've had babies behave this way who were NEVER pushed at the breast. Babies will become frustrated when they can't make breastfeeding work, and some sensitive kids will refuse to even try again. Once in awhile they will self-attach, after much complaining, as you saw. For some kids, this is enough, and they will happily go to breast forever after. For others, it continues to be a struggle. Sometimes moms run out of resources just before they reach the point where breastfeeding is easy. Like the all-female climbing team that gave up their climb of Mt Everest this week 300 feet from the top. They were ill, and the weather was too bad. I felt so sad for them, to go such a long way and have to stop just short of their goal. Sometimes our clients are like this, they just can't seem to make it those last few feet after climbing for miles. Sometimes our compassion and reframing of the situation will allow them to take a break, and sometimes that can restore their resources and allow them to try again. Other times, that's it. It's hard for us, who have coached many climbers to the summit, to watch someone give up with the goal in sight. But we are not doing the work, they are, so they need to be the ones to judge whether they are able to continue. -- Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC New York City mailto:[log in to unmask] *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
