It's important imho for all HCPs interacting with parents using these
materials to understand the parents' motivation for using them. There is a
difference b/w Babywise users (sounds like a good idea, received as a shower
gift, praise from peers) and Preparation for Parenting (the religious
version: taught in a 7 week indoctrination, couched in spiritual coercion,
intimidation and promulgated by "like-minded" peers and church leaders who
pressure these parents socially and spiritually to conform).

The information one presents and how one presents it to empower these
parents differs, based on whether they are using the programs for secular or
religious reasons. In the presentations I've done, there is a 2 page handout
that is helpful both to parents and HCPs, especially listing books dealing
with cults and spiritual abuse issues. Feel free to email me if anyone
wants a copy.

Some of the most poignant and articulate voices against this rot are parents
who used it to their children's detriment, including former leaders in GFI.
These resources are also listed on the handout.

Anna Swisher, MBA, IBCLC
