A young mother in the special care nursery that I work in asked me today could she re-lactate. She had stopped expressing 4 weeks ago. Baby was born at 28 weeks gestation and is now 36 weeks gestation. Mum had a cold last week and the baby has come down with bronchiolitis this week and has been quite sick so she now really wants to do the best thing for her baby. I gave her advice of frequent expressing and spoke with the doctor and obtained a script for Maxalon. She managed to express about 2 mls at one expression today and I have gone through expression techniques with her. I have assured her that relactation is possible but it is a case of wait and see how much milk she eventually manages to express. I believe this girl will put in the effort. She has not got the means to hire a breast pump but has good hand expression technique and will use the nursery's electric pump when she visits. I am interested in other lactnetters experience with re-lactation after 4 weeks and how successful the mothers have been. Also any advice or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.
