50,000 British troops (fresh from
the just-ended Napoleonic War) were
surging into New York State & Maine
when hostilities ceased. Those were the
days when battles were with
only a couple of thousand troops (1000 or so
Brit troops vs 6000 US troops at
the pivotal battle of Crysler's Farm --
several thousand of the US troops
crossed back over the St Lawrence during
the night, so it was really 4 to
1).
An interesting side-bar is another cause of the War of 1812, cited as one
of
the "Intolerable Acts" of the British in Canada: permitting the
French to
continue with their religion, system of law and language, after
being
vanquished in battle.
