Neveu was born in 1919 and at the age of seven-and-a-half performed the Bruch Concerto in Paris. In 1931 she met Carl Flesch who was so impressed by the tweleve year old Neveu that he assumed responsibilty for her musical education. It was at Flesch's insistance (and with his financial help) that she became a late entrant in the 1935 Wieniawski Competition. She had just six weeks to learn the repertoire for the competition. In all there were one hundred and eighty competitors, amongst the oldest being the out-and-out favourite, a Soviet competitor eleven years her senior called David Oistrakh. That Neveu captured the first prize was nothing less then a sensation. A international career was immediately launched. As mentioned she was killed in a plane crash in the Azores on October 28, 1949. There quite a few of her recordings out there. Dutton, on it's super budget label (CDBP 9710) has re-released the Brahms Concerto and a bunch of shorter works which is probably a good place to start. She recorded for EMI which still has most of her work available on CD. In addition there are various air checks on a variety of labels. Peter Schenkman, Toronto, Canada
