Wendy writes: "OUr Florida lactation consultants assoc is having a "very heated debate" regarding the efficacy of using domperidone. It has been stated that it is ILLEGAL for physicains to write the Rx!!..... It is basically in a deadlock, because if it is illegal for the docs to write the rx, then the pharmacist CANNOT compound it!! ....Finally, I don't know if this is a florida issue or not?.... Is the laws for doctors script writing privledges nationwide or state controlled? " This is my understanding of the issue of domperidone in the USA. It is only my understanding of what I have read and heard from various sources. The FDA has not approved domperidone for use in the USA. This is because they have not been asked by the manufacturer to approve it. It does not mean that they have looked at it and decided not to grant approval. The American Academy of Pediatrics lists domperidone as "approved for use in breastfeeding mothers". They must have reviewed enough references to make this statement. They do not approve medications lightly. This medication is on the list of available drugs that my local compounding pharmacist can order and dispense. Compounding pharmacies mix many medications that are not "officially" approved by the FDA. These include making sweeter medicines for children, for example. The Supreme Court just decided to hear a case challenging changes Congress made in 1997 to restrict advertising by compounding pharmacies. Obviously (to me) there is federal government oversight of compounding pharmacies. Then how can it be illegal for a doctor in the USA to write a prescription for these pharmacies to fill?
