Subject: ?American service button i.d.

Hi,

Could anyone help with the identification of a brass button found on
a British, late 19th century colonial battlefield in South Africa?

Unfortunately a drawing is not yet available. Button is in poor
condition. Circular, backed brass button with punched design of
what looks like American eagle with wings spread and head facing
to its right. A shield covers chest of bird with possible laurel leaf
motif around edge of button on lower part.  No inscription visible.

The button in question was an obvious anomaly within an
assemblage otherwise exclusively made up from British General
Service buttons, made in Birmingham UK and adorned with the lion
and Unicorn rampant.

Is this identifiable by date or service arm?

Many thanks in advance.
